Marantz's New Model 70 Launch Reflects a Changing Business Landscape
Marantz, one of the world's most respected names in high-fidelity audio, is introducing the Model 70 integrated amplifier alongside the CD 70 CD player. While the launch celebrates the company's long-standing tradition of premium audio equipment, it also comes during a period of significant corporate change.
The brand has changed ownership multiple times since its founding by Saul Marantz in 1953. One of the most notable recent developments occurred when Masimo, a medical technology company best known for manufacturing pulse oximeters, acquired Sound United in 2022. However, after only a few years, Masimo sold its consumer audio business—including the Marantz brand—to Harman International, a Samsung subsidiary, at a substantial financial loss. This transaction marked yet another chapter in Marantz's long ownership history.
The new Model 70 amplifier continues the company's classic naming tradition established by Saul Marantz, reflecting the heritage of legendary products that helped define high-end home audio. Designed for music enthusiasts, the amplifier is positioned as a premium component within Marantz's current lineup.
Interestingly, although the accompanying CD 70 player is available in both European and American markets, the Model 70 amplifier is not currently listed for sale in the United States. Industry observers have suggested that import duties may play a role, but market positioning also appears to be an important factor. Existing Marantz products already occupy similar price ranges in the U.S., making it more challenging for the new amplifier to fit naturally within the company's current portfolio.
Rather than being driven by a single factor, the launch strategy reflects a combination of pricing considerations, product positioning, corporate restructuring, and changing market conditions. As Marantz begins its next chapter under Harman's ownership, the company continues balancing its rich heritage with the realities of today's highly competitive premium audio market.
